Carl Sargeant was born in 1968 in St Asaph, Denbighshire. He worked at a chemical manufacturing plant, had been a quality and environmental auditor, and an industrial firefighter.

Mr. Sargeant lived in Connah’s Quay and served on the local town council, and as a governor of Deeside College and Ysgol Bryn Deva. He was first elected as a Labour Assembly member for Alyn and Deeside in 2003. In the 2007 election, he was appointed chief whip and deputy minister for assembly business.

Mr. Sargeant was promoted in December 2009 as minister for social justice and local government. He subsequently served as housing minister and natural resources minister before being appointed cabinet secretary for communities and children in May 2016. But after that it went bad for Carl.

Carl Sargeant lost his job as cabinet secretary for communities and children last Friday. He was suspended from Labour after the first minister learned of several alleged incidents involving women. He was sure that he would be declared guilty because everybody was sure he had done what he was accused of, so he decided to take his own life.

Carwyn Jones said: “I asked my office to speak to those women involved who had provided details of those incidents. Because of those conversations I felt I had no choice, but to refer the matter to the party.” The women spoke to his office based on confidentiality.

A family statement said they were devastated beyond words at the loss of the glue that bound them together.

Carl Sargeant’s suicide was according to some people not very brave. They think he would be brave if he took up the fight and spoke for his freedom, and if he kept his hopes up. Unfortunately he didn’t do that.
